The following contains excerpts from the book ‘Technical Package Development for Excel’, First Edition, Jessel Brizan © 2020.
This article focuses on an important aspect of fashion design and one of the most essential components in the line planning and collection development process—the Technical Package. Also known as the Tech Pack, the technical package is crucial to the design, product development and production processes. Essentially, it is the blueprint of the design. It is comprised of a highly detailed collection of information required to produce a design or product.
The tech pack is an invaluable communication tool that facilitates a professional interaction between the designer or brand and the patternmaker, manufacturer or factory. It fosters rapport, builds trust, strengthens relationships, and sets the stage for a successful interaction and hopefully a long-term business partnership.
The tech pack includes all the specifications of a design that are needed for the different stages of production, from the proto sample to mass production. It specifies the raw materials, components, sub-components, labels, packaging, and the proper descriptions and quantities of each incorporated in the design. Depending on the style of the design, the tech pack can be simple or complex. However, when creating a tech pack, it is extremely important that each component be as accurate and meticulous as possible. The more detailed the tech pack, the lower the possibility for error, and thereby the greater the potential for the sample to be true to the original design.
This has the benefit of reducing wastages in money, time, effort, and raw materials. And given the time-sensitive nature of the global fashion industry, reducing the time from concept to the retail floor is critical to the overall profitability and commercial success of the designer and/or design business. More importantly, this aligns with sustainable and ethical business practices, including responsible design, reducing resource inputs, eco-friendly production methods, and waste reduction, helping offset the negative impact of the global fashion industry.
There is no standard format for the design or layout of the tech pack. Depending on the brand’s needs, resources, operational capacity, and/or organisational structure, the technical package may include a few or several components. Therefore, the design of a technical package can vary from one design to another or from one business to another. However, all tech packs should include standard information. A well-prepared industry quality tech pack may include the following components:
Lead Sheet
The Lead Sheet or Design Sheet is the first component to visually illustrate the actual design. It shows a preliminary visual of the design concept and thereby lays the foundation for the outcome of the final product. The Lead Sheet is dedicated to full colour, stylised sketches, digital illustrations, or digital photos which may include front, back and/or profile views of the design.
Technical Illustration Sheet
The Technical Illustration Sheet provides technical flats or illustrations of the design. It shows foundational sketches of the design concept, typically rendered in black and white. Similar to the Lead Sheet, the Technical Illustration Sheet is dedicated to technical illustrations, flats, sketches, digital illustrations, or digital photos, which may include front, back and/or profile views of the design.
Fabric Sheet
The Fabric Sheet provides a visual representation of the fabrications and specifies all the textiles and the respective specifications for each fabric incorporated in the design of the product. The Fabric Sheet is dedicated to full colour, stylised sketches, digital illustrations, or digital photos of each fabric.
Trim/Component Sheet
A Trim, or Component, is a part or element directly utilised and easily identifiable in a finished product. The Trim/Component Sheet ensures that the proper trims and sewing components are used in production. It lists all the trims or components, sub-components, and parts (e.g. lining, interfacing, thread, buttons, snaps, zippers, appliqués, etc.) needed to manufacture the design or product.
Label and Packaging Sheet
The Label and Packaging Sheet lists all the proper labels and other packaging materials incorporated into the production of the design or product. A Label is an identification and/or information tag that is applied to and easily identifiable in a finished product. Packaging refers to the supporting covering, wrapping and/or tagging materials used in the branding and merchandising of a finished product.
Colourway Sheet
The Colourway Sheet provides details of the colour(s) and/or colourway(s), including colour name or colour system (e.g. Pantone) of all the components needed for the production of the design or product.
Construction Detail Sheet
The Construction Detail Sheet provides visual illustrations of the assembly elements such as stitching, stitch types, stitch widths, embroideries, seam finishes, and any other special construction details needed to produce the design or product, and the position or placement of such. It is dedicated to the various construction detail sketches, digital illustrations, or digital photos of the product or design. For complex designs, it is sometimes necessary to incorporate enlarged or blow-up illustrations of the construction details.
Finishing Sheet
The Finishing Sheet specifies any surface treatments, wash effects or finishes applied in the production of the design or product. This sheet is particularly appropriate for garments like denim jeans that incorporate different treatments and wash effects. It is dedicated to sketches, digital illustrations, or digital photos of the placement and/or area of the product where the surface treatment or finish is applied.
Specification Sheet
The Specification Sheet, or Spec Sheet, lists the complete specifications (or specs) of the design or product. It includes all the specifications, including identification Codes, Points of Measure (POM), Tolerance, and Grade Rules for the design or product, particularly in reference to clothing.
Specification Illustration Sheet
The Specification Illustration Sheet provides a visual representation and serves as a complement to the Specification Sheet. It illustrates the complete specifications (specs) of the design, including the points of measure (POM). It is dedicated to detailed specification (spec) flats, sketches, digital illustrations, or digital photos of the design.
Sample Specification Sheet
The Sample Specification Sheet is requisite for the sampling stage of the design and production process. It details the complete specifications of the design for each stage of the sampling process. It is reserved for all the specifications of the sample design, including the Type of Samples, Sample Sizes, Codes, Points of Measure, Tolerances, Request and Actual specifications, Deviations, Notes, and Comments. Given the different types of samples that comprise the sampling stage, it may be necessary to utilise more than one copy of the Sample Specification Sheet for each stage of the sampling process. Please note that the Sample Specification Sheet is reserved for internal use.
Sample Approval Sheet
The Sample Approval Sheet is utilised during the sampling process to approve the sample design for specifications, fit, function, form, construction, materials, trims, labels, and colour. A production test run is often done to gauge the design for quality. The main purpose of the sampling process is to allow the designer or design firm to assess the production capabilities of the manufacturer and to provide a means for quality control in the bulk production process. Please note that the Sample Approval Sheet is reserved for internal use.
Cost Sheet
Being that the technical package includes every component essential to the design process, the Cost Sheet is included here as a key auxiliary component in cost analysis, pricing strategy and profitability analysis. It provides an organised, systematic and strategic approach for tracking, recording and analysing all the product costs incurred during the various stages of the design and production process.
