Remembering Nicole Edmund: A Caribbean Fashion Pioneer

by Jessel Brizan | VALSAYN, Trinidad and Tobago | 22 September 2026

Nicole Edmund, a name obscure to most except those who call her family, friend or colleague, was born in Trinidad and Tobago on 22 September 1979.

Nicole was a customer service professional, fashion entrepreneur, dressmaker, and advocate for excellence in the customer experience, with more than a decade dedicated to meeting and exceeding customer expectations. Her commitment to service excellence was central to her professional philosophy, with a strong focus on delivering positive customer experiences that foster satisfaction, trust, and long-term brand loyalty.

Nicole’s passion for fashion began at an early age. A skilled dressmaker straight out of secondary school, she continued to develop her technical and entrepreneurial skills, earning a Diploma in Fashion Design from the Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design (CAFD) at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in 2011. Her professional experience also extended into photography, further developing her creative perspective and broadening her understanding of visual communication and the fashion industry.

Recognising the need to identify a distinctive niche within the fashion sector, Nicole sought guidance from the Co-operative Division of the then Ministry of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development. This initiative was the genesis of an innovative approach to bringing together fashion practitioners in Trinidad and Tobago through a cooperative business model.

Driven by a commitment to continuous learning and enterprise development, Nicole pursued further education in cooperative management at the Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies. This additional training complemented her fashion expertise and strengthened her understanding of cooperative principles, organisational development, and collective entrepreneurship.

Nicole founded The Fashion Exchange Cooperative Society Limited (The Fashion Exchange), which was officially registered on 13 May 2013, serving as its inaugural president.

The Fashion Exchange set a precedent as the first fashion cooperative in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean, representing a pioneering approach to strengthening the region’s fashion industry. It was created to address the need for greater access to quality resources, raw materials, products, services, networks, and markets within the fashion sector. It sought to connect designers and creative practitioners directly with consumers, provide greater visibility for emerging talent, and promote a distinctive Trinidad and Tobago fashion identity.

Through its cooperative model, The Fashion Exchange aimed to bring together designers, creative entrepreneurs, industry professionals, consumers, and investors, facilitating knowledge sharing, collaboration, access to resources, and commercial opportunities. Its broader vision was to help transform creative talent into sustainable fashion enterprises while contributing to the growth and professionalisation of Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion industry.

After a battle with a serious illness, Nicole transitioned on 15 January 2015.

Subsequently, The Fashion Exchange met its unfortunate demise for myriad reasons, despite concerted efforts to fulfil its promise to transform local fashion.

Nicole’s career reflects the intersection of fashion, customer service, entrepreneurship, and cooperative development. Her journey demonstrates her belief in continuous professional development, collaboration, and the importance of building sustainable business models within Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion industry.

Through her legacy, Nicole remains a champion of customer-focused business practices and contributes to the growth and professionalisation of the local fashion sector.

We celebrate and pay tribute to her living legacy.

May she eternally rest in peace in paradise.
